History Of Victoria's Secret

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2009
Victoria's Secret certainly has a wonderful history, it all started when a graduate student from Stanford Graduate School Of Business felt rather embarassed when it came to purchasing beautiful lingerie from a department store. His name was Roy Raymond who was located in San Francisco, California. In 1977 Roy decided to open his first store at Stanford Shopping Center , thus Victoria's Secret was born. Soon to follow was a mail-order catalog and three other Victoria's Secret stores. The stores were created to make a man comfortable when purchasing women's lingerie, the decor of the stores were Victorian desinged with wood panel walls and friendly staff. Instead of bras and panties being hung on a sterile rack, they were paired together in all sizes and mounted on frames. The stores were very detailed and were quite inviting when a gentleman came to purchase lingerie. After 5 years of operation Roy Raymond sold Victoria's Secret to The Limited, unfortunately his next business adventure ended in bankruptcy and he plummeted to his death off of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Through the 1980's The Limited kept the image intact while expanding to offer an array of merchandies including shoes, perfumes and evening wear with its mail-catalogue that was sent out eight times annually. During the 1990's Victoria's Secret had became the largest American lingerie retailer making over a billion dollars.
In July 2007 the retail chain Limited Brands sold 75% of there retail chain to Sun Capitol Partners so that they could focus on the growth of the Victoria's Secret retail chain and Bath and Body works. There are over a 1000 Victoria's Secret stores across the U.S. and over 100 independet Victoria's Secret Beauty Stores which are located comfortably in many of the shopping centers across the U.S. Selling beauty products, lingerie, sleepwear, shoes, bathing suits, bras and panties over four hundred million catalogs are sent out ever year.
Victoria's Secret has been going green when environmentalist pressured them to create a catalog which was more environmentally friendly. The catalog is no longer made from and woodland caribou range in Canada. The catalogs are now made with 10% Consumer waste on recycled paper.
Victoria's Secret has been targeting middle class America looking to avoid sleaziness due to the image that they carry. In the early 1990's they began to use Supemodels such as Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum and Karolina Kurkova amongst others, deflecting from using celebrity models and endorsments. Victoria's Secret prides themselves in Customer Service and they do believe in trying to upsell the Customer by offering frequent attention along with the Victoria's Secret Credit Card which can provide the consumer with additional discounts and savings including coupons on there merchandise.

Victoria's Secret Shows and Contributions
The first Victoria's Secret fashion show was held in 1995, the world press gave rave reviews reporting that the fashion show was, " the lingerie event of the century." The VS company made headline news as well as broadcast history when they simultaneously broadcast a live lingerie fashion show on the Internet at Times Square drawing 1.5 million viewers after being advertised during the 1999 Super Bowl Game in the United States.
Victoria's Secret has been recognized for its charitable contributions, in 2000 the fashion show had been held in Cannes, France during the Cannes Film Festival , they raised 3.5 million for the Cinema against Aids Charity.
2001-2009 brought controversy, annual shows, cancellation of an entertainer due to Kanye West's mother's untimely death, Rutger's University made an appearance during Tyra Banks last walk on the runway in 2005, the "Fantasy Bra" has been on the runway since 2001 and in 2006 the sub-brand Pink made its debut on the runway. In 2009 the fashion show was held in the Big Apple, New York City where Tyra took her final walk on the runway in 2005.
If Roy Raymond were alive today, he would proud of the retail chain he started one could only imagine what he would of thought seeing Supermodels with Wings on the runway. Imagine it started when one man had a dream and it was unfortunate that he could not be here to see what he created. Roy Raymond if you are looking down from heaven, Thank you for Victoria's Secret. You brought all of us a store that is unique, inviting and classy to think you thought that only men would enjoy it.

- Why Can't Men Wear Panties? PLUS Victoria's Secret L...
Sometimes, a man just likes the feel of panties. Or bras, or corsets, or camisoles, or any one of the delightful array of lingerie that is open without reserve to womenfolk, but which, in spite of feminism...

A womans hub for woman, love it, thank you
This as attractive and beautiful as it is, is very well done. Bravo
I remember quite vividly the 1978 issue of Victoria's Secret catalog, what was most impressive was the soft focus used by the Photgrapher and subdued lighting design. I wish I had kept my copy, it would be a collectors item now. Very interesting Hub. Thanks for sharing
getmyback: I am happy that you enjoyed I love the pink ribbons! :)
writebypen: Thank you I am happy that you appreciated the history of Victorias Secret. :)
Phillyfreeze69: The 1978 catalogue of Victoria's Secret would be fun to see if someone had kept it , what a blast from the blast that would have been interesting to see. :)
Men go out and fight - women stay home in lingerie!
The world would be a better place if the men stayed home in lingerie and let the women fight for a more peaceful resolution!
Sigh, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show could inspire a whole new type of fiction writing for me!
epigramman: lolololo I agree! :D
Don: You should write it! What are you waiting for?:)
Thanks for a great Hub - Victorias Secret is such a big name. Wish I could attend their fashion show.
Regards.
Hey there, Ms. Orchids, I'm finishing a novel and want to get that finished first . . . it's my first one . . . I've got 10 chapters out of probably 14 or 15 written. It's a romance.
Lady_E: I wish I could too! I love VS! Maybe one day you and I could go together. :)
Don Simkovich: Well when you are done, begin on this one! Let me know when it is complete, would love to read it. :)
I always try to learn something everyday and today I learned 2 things today (history of Victoria's secret and a secret identity) which means I can take tomorrow off :)
mtsi1098: I grant you permission to take the day off! lololo Have a great day! :)

So tragic to think of Roy Raymond heartbreaking despair. I remember Justin Timberlake talking about him, on The Social Network, and it made wonder if it was really true. That is so devastating to think that he had resort to that. :'(
Raylen: It is sad. But nobody will ever know what triggers someone to do such a thing. Sometimes it is isolated and other times, well God only knows.
it has got to be the weather. love it
I love the color of this season!!
I love to read (and write) about the beginnings of an icon. VC certainly fits the bill! Thanks for an enjoyable hub.
